How Our Candles Are Made: Behind the Scenes at A Cheerful Giver

People ask us all the time: what makes your candles different? It's a fair question. There are a lot of candles out there. Walk into any home goods store and you'll see shelves packed with them. So what sets A Cheerful Giver apart?

The answer starts in Elmer, New Jersey, in the same small town where we've been making candles since 1991. And it's not just about what goes into our candles. It's about who makes them and how much care goes into every single jar.

Let's take you through the process.

It Starts with the Wax

We use premium paraffin wax. Not soy, not a blend. Paraffin. And there's a good reason for that.

Paraffin holds more fragrance than any other candle wax. Period. When people tell us our candles are the strongest smelling candles they've ever burned, that's not an accident. It's the wax doing its job. Paraffin has a higher fragrance load capacity, which means we can pack more scent into every jar without the candle performing poorly.

It also burns cleaner and more consistently than a lot of people expect. When you use high-quality paraffin and proper wicking (more on that in a minute), you get an even, steady burn with great scent throw.

The Fragrance

This is where things get fun. Our fragrance team tests constantly. And when we say test, we mean it. A scent doesn't make it into our lineup just because it smells good in the bottle. It has to perform.

We test for cold throw (how it smells when the candle isn't lit), hot throw (how it fills a room when burning), and longevity (whether the scent stays consistent from first light to last). A candle that smells amazing for the first hour but fades by hour three? That's not making the cut.

We also test fragrance combinations obsessively. Some of our most popular scents, like Praline Caramel Sticky Buns, went through dozens of variations before we landed on the final version. When you're trying to create the best scented candles on the market, you don't rush the process.

Mixing and Pouring

Once we've got our wax and fragrance dialed in, it's time to mix. The wax is heated to a precise temperature before the fragrance oil gets added. Too hot and you burn off the scent. Too cool and it won't bind properly. There's a sweet spot, and our team knows exactly where it is.

After mixing, the wax is hand-poured into our signature jars. Yes, hand-poured. Every single one. For our Keepers of the Light 34oz Papa Jars, that's a lot of wax going into each container. But hand-pouring gives us control that machines just can't match. We can check the pour, adjust if needed, and make sure every jar meets our standards.

This is part of why our candles are true long lasting candles. That 150+ hour burn time comes from getting the wax-to-fragrance ratio right and pouring it properly. There are no shortcuts.

The Wicking: Where CODI Comes In

Here's the part of our story that means the most to us.

Every candle we make is wicked by hand. And the people doing that work are adults with special needs, employed through our partnership with CODI (Community Options for Disabled Individuals).

This isn't a token gesture or a small side project. It's central to who we are. CODI team members come to our facility in Elmer, NJ every day and do skilled, meaningful work. They place and secure the wicks in every jar before the wax is poured. It's precise work that requires attention and care, and they do it with pride.

For many of these workers, this is their first real job. They earn real wages, build real skills, and are valued members of our production team. When we say A Cheerful Giver is about more than candles, this is what we mean.

So when you light one of our candles, know that someone put that wick there by hand, with care, and that their work matters.

Quality Control

After pouring, every candle goes through quality checks. We're looking at fill levels, wick placement, surface appearance, and overall consistency. If a candle doesn't look right or the wick is off-center, it doesn't ship.

We also do burn testing on every batch. Random candles from each production run get lit and monitored. We check the flame height, the melt pool (the liquid wax that forms on top as it burns), and the scent throw. A good melt pool should reach the edges of the jar within a couple hours. If it doesn't, something needs adjusting.

This kind of attention to detail is what separates American made candles done right from mass-produced imports. We can trace every batch back to when it was made and who worked on it.

Packaging and Shipping

Once a candle passes inspection, it gets labeled, lidded, and packaged for shipping. Our Papa Jars are heavy (34 ounces of wax will do that), so we pack them carefully. Nobody wants a broken candle showing up at their door.

Every label includes the scent name, burn time, and safety information. We also include care tips because how you burn your candle matters almost as much as how it's made. (Quick tip: always trim your wick to 1/4 inch before lighting. You'll get a cleaner burn and longer life.)

Why "Made in USA" Matters

We've been making candles in Elmer, New Jersey since 1991. That's over 30 years in the same community, employing local workers, supporting local families, and keeping production right here in America.

Could we manufacture overseas for less money? Sure. Plenty of candle companies do. But that was never what A Cheerful Giver was about. Our name isn't just branding. It's a commitment. We give people jobs. We give back to our community. And we give you a candle that's made with real care by real people.

When you buy American made candles from us, you're voting with your wallet for the kind of business you want to see in the world. Small town. Family values. Quality over quantity.

From Our Hands to Your Home

Every candle we sell has a story. It started as raw wax and fragrance oil. It was mixed, tested, and poured by hand. Its wick was placed by someone who takes pride in their work. It was inspected, packaged, and shipped with care.

And now it's sitting in your living room, filling your home with a scent you love, burning for 150 hours or more.

That's what goes into every A Cheerful Giver candle. We wouldn't have it any other way.
